If you’re a resident of Fort McMurray, it’s crucial to be aware of the municipal dump hours and other essential information to ensure proper waste disposal. The landfill is located on Landfill Drive, approximately 1.6 kilometers south of Fort McMurray on Highway 63. The entrance is on the west side of the highway.
Hours of Operation
The Fort McMurray Municipal Dump operates on the following schedule:
- Monday to Sunday: 8:15 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.
- Closed on December 25th and January 1st
Fees
While some items are free to dispose of year-round at the Municipal landfill, some items do have disposal fees. For those fees, debit, credit, and cash are accepted as payment. If paying by cash, correct change is recommended to ensure a quicker transaction.
Residential and Commercial Fees
- Residential waste (over 200 kg): $70.00/metric tonne
- Residential minimum (under 200 kg): $10.00/visit
- Clean soil: FREE (No testing required if less than 20 metric tonnes per residential address)
- Residential recyclables: FREE
- Household hazardous waste: FREE
- Electronic waste: FREE (Items listed under the provincial program – albertarecycling.ca)
- Yard Waste: FREE (Loads must be clean and segregated from other waste)
- Trees (any size): FREE (To be dropped off in segregated loads)
- Construction, demolition, and renovation: $104.00/metric tonne
- Commercial waste: $96.00/metric tonne (Waste generated by ICI sectors, excludes construction, demolition, and renovation waste)
- Commercial recyclables: $96.00/metric tonne
- Special handling: $200.00/metric tonne
- CFC appliances: $46.00/each (Includes fridges, freezers, water coolers, air conditioners)
- Large commercial CFC appliances: $143.00/each (Includes deep freezers, display coolers, rooftop AC units)
- Mattresses or box springs: $28.00/each
- Scale usage fee: $40.00/visit
- Tires: FREE (Under 39 inches, as per albertarecycling.ca)
- Scrap metal: FREE
- Segregated concrete and asphalt: FREE
- Wood and Wood products: $25.00/metric tonne (Includes: rough lumber, pallets, plywood, osb, logs and/or whole trees. Excluding furniture and treated/painted wood)
Commercial Haulers
All commercially registered properties or commercial contractors are required to have the soil tested. Soil disposal applications are available by calling Pulse at 780-743-7000.
- Approved contaminated soil: $87.00/metric tonne
- Approved clean soil: $3.00/metric tonne
Recycling Programs
The Fort McMurray Municipal Dump offers several recycling programs to help residents responsibly dispose of their materials. These programs include:
- Used oil recycling program
- Glycol recycling program
- Propane cylinder recycling (up to and including 20 lb. units)
- Battery recovery program (no industrial-sized batteries)
- Tire recycling program (up to 24 inch)
- E-waste recovery program
- E-waste extended pilot program
- White goods program (refrigerators and other appliances containing CFC)
- Scrap metal recovery program
- Concrete and rebar diversion program
- Asphalt recovery program
Unacceptable Materials
There are certain items that cannot be accepted at the Fort McMurray Municipal Dump. These items include:
- Free liquids
- Drilling muds
- Explosives
- Biomedical/biological/pathological waste
- Radioactive waste
- Oilfield waste
- Pesticides
- Bentonite and bentonite-contaminated products
- Asbestos
- Industrial abrasives
- Ozone depleting substances
- Hazardous waste
- Mold
- Hot ashes
- Sulphur and sulphur-contaminated products
- Rig matts
- Creosote Poles or Railway ties
- Automobiles
- Conveyor belting or rubber excavator tracks
- Bulky waste material
- Hose, pipe, and cables longer than a maximum of 4 feet (1.2 meters).
- Stone and rocks maximum diameter of 1 foot (30 centimeters)
- Tanks, containers, vessels, and barrels are generally accepted if double rinsed and cut down to a maximum of 4 feet (1.2 meters) long or wide.
Weather Impacts
Weather conditions can impact services at the Fort McMurray Municipal Dump. When it’s wet or snowy, conditions can get messy, and the landfill may need to modify service. It’s always a good idea to call Pulse before visiting the landfill during inclement weather to inquire about any service impacts.
Illegal Dumping
Illegal dumping is a serious issue that can have negative environmental and financial impacts. If you witness illegal dumping, report it to Pulse at 780-743-7000.
