Accepted Materials

The following materials are accepted at the drop-off sites:

  • Yard waste
  • Food scraps (at designated sites)
  • Brush
  • Batteries (AA, AAA, etc.)
  • Batteries (Lead acid)
  • Cooking oil
  • Recyclables (cardboard, etc.)
  • Building materials (with restrictions)
  • Large items
  • Appliances
  • Electronics (televisions, etc.)
  • Scrap metal
  • Styrofoam
  • Excess trash
  • Mixed rigid plastics (not recycled)

Restrictions

  • Residents and property owners can bring the equivalent of one pick-up or small trailer load of material each day (about 5′ x 8′).
  • Building materials must follow building material regulations.
  • No 55 or 30 gallon drums or barrels.
  • Propane tanks will be accepted if completely empty and brought to the site with all valves completely open.
  • 1 pound camp stove propane tanks should go to Dane County Clean Sweep.
  • No medical waste is accepted at the sites.

Fees

If you do not pay the Resource Recovery Special Charge, you must pay a recycling fee for certain items before taking them to the drop-off site. The list of items that require a recycling fee can be found on the Large Item page.

Additional Information

  • Streets Division staff cannot provide unloading assistance.
  • Residents and property owners only. Proof of residency or property ownership is required.
  • Contractors are not allowed to use the drop-off sites.
  • Please abide by the posted hours.
  • Stay in the specified drop-off site area.
  • Contact the Streets Division to clarify any questions about materials or fees.

Madison County Solid Waste Management

Precinct Transfer Stations

Madison County provides four precinct transfer stations for residents to drop their household garbage. A permit is required and may be purchased at the Madison County Tax Assessors Office, Room 102, in the Madison County Courthouse.

Hours of Operation

  • Monday-Friday: 8:00am – 4:00pm
  • Saturday: 8:00am – 12:00pm

Additional Information

  • Illegal dumping continues to be a challenge for Madison County. Citizens may report illegal dumping by completing and returning the Illegal Dumping Form available on the Madison County website.
  • All on-site sewage system (septic system) complaints are handled through the Wastewater Office.
