Trash Pick Up Schedule in Ithaca
Trash collection in Ithaca occurs weekly for city residences. Residents should be aware of the following key guidelines:
- Place trash at the curb the night before scheduled collection
- Collection crews begin as early as 4 a.m.
- Use containers no larger than 32 gallons
- Filled containers should not exceed 70 pounds

Trash Tags
Effective January 1, 2024, the City of Ithaca implemented a new trash tag system:
- One type of trash tag available
- Large yellow tags valid for trash cans/bags up to 35 pounds
- Cost: $5.00 per tag or $30.00 for a sheet of 6

Recycling Services
Recycling is collected every other week on the same day as trash collection. For detailed recycling information, residents can contact Tompkins County Solid Waste at 607-273-5700.
Yard Waste Collection
Seasonal yard waste collection is available:
- Collection period: April 1 to November 30
- Collected on weeks opposite recycling collection
- Yard waste tags cost $9 for a sheet of 6
- Available at similar locations as trash tags
Holiday Trash Pick Up Changes
Trash is not collected on major holidays, including:
- New Year’s Day
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day
- Presidents’ Day
- Memorial Day
- Juneteenth
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Indigenous Peoples’ Day
- Veteran’s Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
When a holiday falls on a collection day, pickup will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week.
