Hours of Operation

  • Tuesday & Thursday: 2 PM – 6 PM
  • Wednesday & Friday: 7 AM – 11 AM
  • Saturday: 8 AM – 2 PM
  • Sunday & Monday: Closed

Fees

  • Transfer Station Stickers or Annual Decal Updates: Available at the Canaan Town Office
  • Items Needing Freon Removal (Refrigerators, Freezers, etc.): $10
  • Microwaves: $5
  • Television Sets, Computers, or Computer Monitors: $15
  • Propane Tanks (20-pound): $1
  • Propane Tanks (Larger): $10
  • Tires (Passenger): $5 each
  • Tires (Truck): $21 each
  • Fluorescent Bulbs and Tubes: 50¢ each

Special Collection Days

  • Household Hazardous Waste (HHW): Held several times per year. Check the town calendar for upcoming dates.
  • Bulky Waste: Oversized furniture, construction debris, and other large items.

Rules and Regulations

  • The Transfer Station is for Canaan and Orange residents only.
  • Permits to use the facility are required.
  • Recycling is encouraged to save on disposal costs.
  • The Transfer Station is for household waste only. No commercial waste is permitted, but commercial recycling is allowed.
  • Follow the directions of the Transfer Station Attendant at all times.
  • Bulky waste like furniture, mattresses, and construction waste must go to the Lebanon Landfill unless you wait until the Town has a Bulky Waste Collection Day.
  • No more than two cars side by side in front of the hopper!
  • The next two cars wait at the first stop sign until the car in front of them has left the hopper area.

Recycling

  • The Town of Canaan has a single stream of all recyclables.
  • Materials taken include:
    • Paper
    • Cardboard
    • Plastic bottles and jugs
    • Metal cans
    • Glass bottles and jars
  • NO SORTING BETWEEN PAPER AND CONTAINERS – SINGLE STREAM RECYCLING!

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)

  • Must be brought to the transfer station on advertised days.
  • Items that are considered HHW include:
    • Batteries
    • Cleaning products
    • Pesticides
    • Herbicides
  • No Commercial Waste – that means no hazardous waste that came from a business.
  • Residents are eligible to bring in no more than 5 gallons or 40 pounds per collection day.
  • Keep the hazardous waste in the ORIGINAL CONTAINER if at all possible.

Bulky Waste

  • Oversized furniture like couches, chairs, beds, and tables: $25 per cubic yard
  • Construction debris (NOT concrete, dirt, stone, or asphalt): $45 per cubic yard
  • Asphalt shingles (higher rate): $75 per cubic yard
  • Large individual items that usually can’t fit in our compactor: $25 per cubic yard
  • Rugs, cushions, textiles, and mattresses: $25 per cubic yard
  • Non-metal plumbing fixtures like tubs and toilets (plastic & ceramic): $50 per cubic yard
  • CUBIC YARD IS 3’ by 3’ by 3’
