The City of Amsterdam provides convenient garbage collection services to its residents. To ensure proper waste disposal, it’s crucial to be aware of the designated dump hours and guidelines.

Dump Hours and Locations

The City of Amsterdam operates two transfer stations for garbage and large item disposal:

• Amsterdam Transfer Station

  • Address: 1247 Route 5S, Amsterdam, NY 12010
  • Hours: Monday – Friday: 7am-3pm, Saturday: 8am-11:30am, Closed on Sundays and holidays

• Western Transfer Station

  • Address: 4583 Route 5S, Sprakers, NY 12166
  • Hours: Monday – Friday: 7am-3pm, Saturday: 8am-11:30am, Closed on Sundays and holidays

Garbage Collection Schedule

Garbage collection is provided as part of your taxes. Regular garbage collection is scheduled as follows:

• Monday through Friday: Garbage is picked up daily.

Recycling Collection Schedule

Recycling is collected on Wednesdays only.

Designated Holidays

Garbage and recycling collection will not occur on the following holidays:

• New Year’s Day (January 1st)
• Memorial Day
• Independence Day (July 4th)
• Labor Day
• Thanksgiving
• Christmas (December 25th)

Holiday Schedule Change: If your scheduled collection day falls on a holiday, please refer to the following schedule:

• Monday Holiday: Garbage normally collected on Monday will be collected on Tuesday; Tuesday’s garbage will be collected on Wednesday along with Wednesday’s normal collection. The remainder of the week will be unchanged.
• Tuesday Holiday: Garbage normally collected on Tuesday will be collected on Wednesday along with Wednesday’s normal collection. The remainder of the week will be unchanged.
• Thursday Holiday: Garbage normally collected Thursday will be collected on Wednesday along with Wednesday’s normal collection. The remainder of the week will remain unchanged.
• Friday Holiday: Garbage normally collected on Friday will be collected on Thursday and Thursday’s garbage will be collected on Wednesday along with Wednesday’s normal collection. The remainder of the week will be unchanged.

Large Item Disposal

Large items, such as furniture and appliances, can be disposed of at the transfer stations. However, a separate payment is required for large item disposal.

Prohibited Items

The following items should not be disposed of in regular garbage or recycling bins:

• Rubber gloves
• Paper towels
• Baby wipes
• Feminine products
• Cooking oils

These items should be disposed of in designated hazardous waste facilities.
