Hours of Operation:

  • Solid Waste Disposal Drop-off:
    • Tuesday – Friday: 10 am – 2 pm
    • Saturday: 7 am – 2 pm

What You Can Bring:

  • Air conditioners (drain water and fluids)
  • Hot water heaters
  • Household furniture
  • Large toys (kiddie pools, playhouses, disassembled swing sets)
  • Major appliances (refrigerators, washers and dryers, dishwashers, and stoves)
  • Mattresses and box springs (does not have to be wrapped in plastic), bed frames
  • Rugs

What You Can’t Bring:

  • Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)
  • E-cycling (Computers, TV’s, or other electronics taken at HHW event)
  • Document Shredding
  • Food Waste
  • Bricks
  • Ceiling tile
  • Construction and Demolition Materials (drywall, insulation, asbestos, sewage spillage & debris)

Additional Disposal Options:

  • Household Hazardous Waste (HHW): Collected on one Thursday and one Saturday each month at RFK Stadium Lot 3, 2400 E Capitol St NE. Check the HHW collection schedule for specific dates and times.
  • E-cycling: Drop off unwanted electronic equipment at the HHW collection events.
  • Document Shredding: Available on the first Saturday of every month at the Benning Road Transfer Station, beginning November 6, 2021.

Identification Requirements:

To use the Fort Totten Transfer Station, District residents must provide proof of residency. Acceptable forms of identification include:

  • DC driver’s license
  • Photo ID issued by another state plus a current utilities bill (within the last 30 days) or a copy of your residential lease or deed. The names on the photo ID and the utility bill or lease/deed must be the same.

Free Compost for Residents:

The Fort Totten Transfer Station offers free compost to District residents. Bring your own bags and shovel to fill up to five 32-gallon bags per visit.
