Franklin County Landfill
The Franklin County Landfill is the primary disposal facility for household waste, industrial waste, and yard waste in the county. It is located at 9340 Virgil H. Goode Highway (Route 220 South) in Rocky Mount, VA 24151.
Hours of Operation:
- Monday through Friday: 7:30 am to 4 pm
- Saturday: 7 am to Noon
- Closed on Sundays, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day
Tipping Fees:
- Commercial waste: $50 per ton
- Construction waste: $50 per ton
- Construction demolition waste (brought in by homeowners on their own vehicle): No charge
- New construction debris and shingles: $50 per ton for everyone
Accepted Materials:
- Household waste
- Industrial waste
- Yard waste
- Scrap metal
- White goods (discarded appliances such as stoves, refrigerators, dryers, and dishwashers)
- Cardboard
Tire Disposal Fees:
- ATV, lawn mower, or motorcycle tires: $1 per tire
- Passenger car/light truck tires: $4 per tire
- Tires used for a semi-truck or trailer with a gross weight of 15,000 pounds or more and manufactured for larger vehicles or commercial use: $5 per tire
- Construction or heavy equipment tires, as well as large tractor tires over 20 inches: $10 per tire
Note: If rims are included on tires, there will be an extra charge of $3.00 per tire.
Brush Debris / Large Bulk Items:
All brush debris or large bulk items should be brought to the Franklin County Landfill for disposal.
Manned Green Box Sites
In addition to the landfill, Franklin County also operates several manned green box sites throughout the county. These sites are secure and watched for safety and compliance. Most of these sites have large roll-off containers for bulk waste (furniture) and scrap metal.
Hours of Operation:
- Monday through Friday: 7 am to 7 pm
- Saturday: 8 am to 6 pm
- Sunday: 10 am to 6 pm
Accepted Materials:
- Household waste
- Scrap metal
- Tires (for a small fee)
- Bulk waste (furniture)
- Small amounts of residential brush (at the Hardy and Lake Watch sites only)
Rules for Residential Waste and Brush
There are certain rules that residents must follow in order to use the manned green box sites:
- Proof of Franklin County residency or tax payment may be requested.
- Trailer loads of waste may be rejected and diverted to the landfill.
- Paint cans can be accepted if the paint is dried up on a media like cat litter or sawdust. Flowing liquids are not accepted.
