Curbside Trash and Recycling
The City of Gloucester provides weekly curbside trash and recycling services for single-family and multi-family residences with up to four apartments.
Trash Collection
- Place trash in official City-issued purple bags.
- Bags must be closed and tied.
- Place bags curbside by 7:00 AM on your designated collection day.
- Bags and/or barrels cannot weigh more than 50 pounds.
- To dispose of items that do not fit in the purple bag, purchase a $10 Bulk Item Sticker.
Recycling Collection
- Place recyclables in designated blue recycling bins.
- Acceptable materials include paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and jugs, metal cans, and glass bottles and jars.
- Rinse out food and beverage containers before recycling.
- Do not place recyclables in plastic bags.
Drop-Off Recycling Programs
Gloucester offers several drop-off recycling programs for specific materials:
- Compost Recycling Program: Compost Facility accepts leaves, yard waste, and brush on the last Saturday of every month from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
- Scrap Metal Program: Department of Public Works (DPW) Yard accepts metal items (at least 80% metal) on the last Saturday of every month from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
- Mercury & Fluorescent Light Bulb Program: Board of Health and DPW accept thermometers, thermostats, switches, batteries, and fluorescent light bulbs during regular business hours and on the last Saturday of every month from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
- Automotive Recycling Program: DPW accepts oil filters, motor oil, tires, and car batteries. Oil must be as clean as possible. Tires must have rims removed.
Appliance and Electronics Disposal
- Appliances, computer monitors, televisions, and dehumidifiers are picked up curbside once a month after purchasing a $30 sticker from the DPW.
- Place items curbside by 7:00 AM on your designated collection day.
Hazardous Waste Disposal
- Household hazardous waste, such as oil-based paints, gasoline, pesticides, and varnish, is collected at the DPW on the last Saturday of September during the Household Hazardous Waste Day.
Mattress Recycling
- Starting November 3, 2023, residents can schedule mattress and box spring collection through UTEC.
- The cost is $40 per item.

Dump Hours
The DPW Yard, located at 28 Poplar Street, Gloucester, MA 01930, is open for drop-off recycling programs during the following hours:
