Convenience Centers
Wake County operates 11 convenience centers where residents can drop off their trash and recyclables. These centers are open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., except for holidays.
Acceptable Items:
- Cardboard
- Clothing and shoes
- Electronics (at designated sites on weekends only)
- Food waste (at designated sites only)
- Garbage (household waste and bulky items under 8 feet long/wide)
- Household construction debris from homeowners only (at designated sites only)
- Mattresses (limit 2 mattresses and 2 box springs per day per person)
- Mixed recycling (metal food & drink cans, glass bottles & jars, mixed paper, food and beverage cartons, plastic bottles, tubs, jugs & jars)
- Oyster shells
- Scrap metal (power equipment must be drained of gas & oil)

- Batteries (accepted at Household Hazardous Waste Facilities)

- Burning or smoldering material

- Commercial, industrial, institutional waste
- Concrete, bricks, pavers

- Cooking Oil (accepted at Multi-Material Drop-Off Facilities)
- Dead animals (accepted at South Wake Landfill, but not microbiological or pathological waste)
- Drums containing debris (empty and punctured drums are accepted)

- Flammables (accepted at Household Hazardous Waste Facilities)

Site Rules:
- Construction waste is only accepted from Wake County homeowners.
- Residents using a box truck, dual-axle, or enclosed trailer to dispose of trash require a trash pass.
- Waste from income properties is not accepted.
- No exchange of materials is allowed on site.
- Open-body vehicles transporting waste must be secured.
- Loitering, rummaging, or removing articles from containers is prohibited.
- Children and pets must remain in vehicles.
South Wake Landfill
The South Wake Landfill is located at 6300 Old Smithfield Road in Apex, NC. It is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., except for holidays.
The landfill accepts waste from licensed haulers, residents, and businesses on a limited basis. Residents and businesses must pay by cash, check, or credit card (up to $200). All waste must originate from within Wake County.
