Yard Waste & Recycling Center Hours
The Yard Waste & Recycling Center is located at 25 Brixton Street in West Hartford. Its hours of operation are as follows:
- Monday – Friday: 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM (Last vehicle accepted at 2:45 PM)
- Saturday: 7:00 AM – 12:00 PM (April – December 14. Closed Saturdays, December 28, January, February, and March)
- Sunday: CLOSED
The center is closed on the following holidays: New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas.
Permit Requirements
An annual permit is required to use the Yard Waste & Recycling Center. Permits can be purchased online here with a credit card or in person at the Public Works office, located at 1033 New Britain Avenue, Wednesday – Friday from 8 AM to 3 PM ONLY. The office is closed for lunch from 12 Noon to 1 PM. Day permits are available on an exception basis.
Note: Permits are only issued to town residents whose vehicles are registered in the town of West Hartford. Commercial, rental, or out-of-town vehicles will not be granted a permit.
Accepted Materials
The Yard Waste & Recycling Center accepts a wide range of materials, including:
- Books (hard and soft back, textbooks, magazines)
- Brush (no greater than 4 inches in diameter and 4 feet in length)
- Clean Fill & Concrete Rubble (with a 1/2 cu. yd. maximum drop-off)
- Electronics Recycling: computers, monitors, televisions, VCRs, DVD Players, PDAs, copiers, microwaves, telephones, and anything with a plug and no freon. Items not accepted: smoke detectors, hazardous materials and liquids, humidifiers/dehumidifiers, and air conditioners
- Household recycling: Plastic bottles, containers, tubs, lids, and single-use cups (no lids or straws); glass, cardboard, boxboard, paper; metal containers (cans, aluminum foil, foil containers, food-grade aerosol containers)
- Leaves (delivered in bulk or 30-gallon biodegradable paper bags– no plastic bags accepted)
- Mattresses and Box Springs (must not be wet)
- Mercury Thermostats only
- Paint (must be in labeled containers)
- Scrap Metal (items must be completely metal)
- Textiles: Clothing and shoe donations including: all clothing, bed sheets, pillowcases, blankets, comforters, boots, coats, curtains, draperies, flip flops, hats, jackets, purses, shoes, socks, stuffed animals, suits, sweaters, table linens, ties, and undergarments. Worn, torn, ripped, and stained items are also acceptable.
Materials Available to Residents Free of Charge
In addition to accepting a variety of materials, the Yard Waste & Recycling Center also offers some materials to residents free of charge, including:
- Compost
- Sand (during winter months only)
Additional Information
- Residents are required to load/unload their own vehicles.
- Commercial yard waste and clean wood are no longer accepted at the Town’s recycling center.
- Compost is available for pick up only at the Recycling Center facility. Quantities are limited to bags and barrels for personal yard use. No trucks or pick-up loads allowed. Compost is free and usually available beginning in April, dependent on weather.
- Leaf Vouchers are no longer accepted at the Recycling Center.
