West Haven Dump Hours: Get Rid of Your Junk Responsibly

Bulk Trash Pickup

The City of West Haven provides bulk trash pickup twice a year, in the designated bulk pickup weeks of April 22-26 and September 16-20. During these weeks, you can place your bulk items curbside on your scheduled collection day.

Acceptable Bulk Items:

• Couches
• Chairs
• Tables
• Carpeting
• Padding
• Fencing (cut in half and stacked neatly)

Unacceptable Items:

• Building materials
• Tires
• Mattresses
• Propane tanks
• Hazardous waste
• Sand, stone, mortar, conduit, gypsum blocks, lumber, molding, bathroom fixtures, asphalt, plasterboard, plaster, trees, tree stumps, or other refuse from building, remodeling, landscaping, or excavating

Guidelines:

• The amount of bulk trash per collection is limited to 6 cubic yards.
• Bulk items must be separated and orderly.
• Do not place items next to a mailbox, utility pole, or close to a fence.
• Bulk trash must be generated by the customer at the residential unit where it is collected.
• A $100 fine per daily offense will be imposed for exceeding the 6 cubic yard limit or for placing items in front of a vacant lot or home.

Compost Site

The City of West Haven also operates a compost site at 1 Kimberly Avenue. Here, you can drop off:

• Brush (cut into 3-6-foot lengths and tied in small bundles, no more than 70 pounds)
• Logs and stumps (prohibited)
• Leaf bags (curbside pickup or drop-off at the compost site)
• Grass clippings (in separate bags from leaves)

Hours of Operation:

• Monday – Wednesday: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
• Thursday and Friday: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Other Services

In addition to bulk trash pickup and the compost site, the City of West Haven offers the following services:

• Mattress Drop-Off: Available from April 1-October 4, at the compost site.
• Brush, Branches & Tree Limbs: Picked up in the 1st and 3rd weeks of each month.
• Metals/White Goods (Household Appliances): Call the Highway Department at 203-937-3644 or 203-937-3585 to schedule a pickup.
• Tires: Can be brought to Town Fair Tire, 63 Boston Post Road, Orange, for a fee of $2.75 per tire.
• Hazardous Waste: Can be dropped off for free at HazWaste Central, 90 Sargent Drive, New Haven. Open Saturday mornings from mid-May through October.
• Christmas Trees: Curbside pickup in January and February only. A $25 fee will be charged for pickups after February 29th.
