The Whitehorse Waste Management Facility (WMF) is the primary waste disposal site for the city of Whitehorse, Yukon. The WMF is located approximately six kilometers north of downtown Whitehorse at Mile 91972 (Mile 919.72) on the Alaska Highway.

The WMF is open to the public during the following hours:

  • Weekdays: 7:30 am to 5:30 pm
  • Weekends: 9:00 am to 5:30 pm

The WMF is closed on Good Friday, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.

Tipping Fees

Waste disposal at the WMF is subject to tipping fees. The fees vary depending on the type of waste being disposed of. A list of tipping fees can be found on the City of Whitehorse website.

Controlled Waste

Controlled waste must be sorted and separated before disposal. Controlled waste includes items such as:

  • Batteries
  • Electronics
  • Fluorescent light bulbs
  • Household hazardous waste
  • Paint
  • Propane tanks

Controlled waste can be disposed of at the WMF for a fee.

Banned Waste

Some types of waste are banned from disposal at the WMF. These items include:

  • Asbestos
  • Biomedical waste
  • Explosives
  • Radioactive waste

Banned waste must be disposed of at a licensed hazardous waste disposal facility.

Recyclables

Recyclables should be brought to a local recycling depot. Residents can bring recycling to either of the following locations:

  • P&M Recycling
  • Raven Recycling

Residents can also organize recycling curbside collections through Whitehorse Blue Bin Recycling.

Household Hazardous Waste

Starting February 3, 2024, residents will be able to dispose of their household hazardous waste (HHW) for free, every Saturday from 9 am – 4 pm at the Whitehorse Waste Management Facility.

HHW materials include liquid paint, motor oil and their containers, solvents, gasoline, BBQ starter, anti-freeze, household cleaning products, compact fluorescent light bulbs, household and car batteries, pesticides, aerosol cans and other containers under pressure such as bear spray and propane canisters. Dropped off material should be properly labeled/identifiable. Commercial hazardous waste is not accepted and regular tipping fees apply for all non-HHW waste.

Clean-Up Days

This year’s Clean-up Days are May 18 to 22, 2023.

During Clean-up Days, residential tipping fees are waived on these sorted items:

  • Garbage
  • Food and yard waste
  • Construction and demo waste
  • Mattresses and box-springs

Fees are waived on loads from a car, pick-up truck or small utility trailer.

Note: Tipping fees apply on metals and appliances.

Compost Sales

The City of Whitehorse offers compost for sale to residents. Compost can be purchased in bulk or in bags. Bulk compost pick-ups must be scheduled by calling 867-668-8350 ext. 4.

What Goes Where app

The City of Whitehorse has developed a What Goes Where app to help residents sort their waste. The app can be downloaded for free from the App Store or Google Play.
