South Algonquin Dump Hours: Everything You Need to Know

Landfill Site Hours of Operation:

The South Algonquin Landfill Site is open during the following hours:

• October 25, 2023 to March 31, 2024:
  • Wednesdays: 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Saturdays: 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Waste Collection Sites:

The Township of South Algonquin operates two waste collection sites located at:

• Whitney: 462 Nipissing Road
• Madawaska: 6319 Highway 523

Things to Remember When Using Waste Collection:

• Collection can be anywhere from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
• Place your waste at the roadside on the scheduled day of collection.
• If waste gets scattered by animals, it is the property owners’ responsibility to clean up the waste.
• Only household waste will be collected.
• Approved, removable containers are permitted, provided the waste is in a garbage bag.
• Waste must be in garbage bags and weigh less than 18.14 kg or 40 lbs.
• Residents who store household waste in private bins or boxes will be required to remove the waste from these bins on the day of collection and put the waste at the side of the nearest Township-maintained road or public highway. Private bins must be located on private property or off of the obvious road allowance.

Household Hazardous Waste Day:

To keep harmful materials out of the landfill site, the township offers a Household Hazardous Waste Day. This event is held annually and alternates between the Madawaska and Whitney waste disposal sites. Usually it’s held in August. Information regarding the date and location of the next Household Hazardous Waste Day will be provided at the bottom of the page once it has been established.

Items Accepted Free of Charge:

At the landfill sites, the following items are accepted free of charge:

• Electronics: Microwaves, all small kitchen appliances, lamps, vacuums, laptops, cell phones, televisions, drills, electronic toys.
• Aluminum: Please help by making sure deposited items are made from aluminum. Aluminum is not magnetic (for example soft drink cans and cat food cans).
• Large appliances: All appliances are accepted. Please place fridges and freezers in a normal standing position and latching or locking doors must be removed.
• Tires: Tires on rims will not be accepted.
• Batteries: Most types of batteries (not car batteries) are accepted at both landfill sites. Please sort your batteries and place in the appropriate battery bin. Car batteries can be disposed at our annual Household Hazardous Waste Day. Collection kits for batteries weighing under 5 kg are also available at the municipal office.
• Steel: All types of steel are accepted. This includes clean food cans.

Waste Disposal and Landfill Site Fees:

Proof of demolition permit or proof of civic address number must be provided.

If more than one after-hours entry is required, arrangements can be made to have the Landfill Attendant remain on site for the initial entry fee plus per hour rate (Applies to contractor or resident)	$30.00/hr

Blue Box Recycling Program:

As of August 24th, the Blue Box Recycling Program will begin at both landfill sites.

Acceptable Items:

• Empty and Clean Plastic Bottles, Containers and Cups
• Empty and Clean Bottles and Jars (All Colors)
• Empty and Clean Boxed Food and Beverage Cartons, Paper Cups
• Empty and Clean Aluminum and Steel Cans, Aluminum Foil
• Newspaper, Magazines, Printed Paper and Shredded Paper (Shredded paper in a paper bag)
• Flattened and Dry Cardboard

Unacceptable Items:

• Organic, kitchen, yard and animal waste.
• Hazardous waste like paint, gas or aerosol cans, sharp objects, electronics and batteries.
• Scrap metal, wires and cables, home and construction waste.
• Napkins, paper towels and food soiled cardboard.
• Styrofoam™ packaging materials and takeout food/ beverage containers.
• Textiles, housewares, windows, ceramics, and other reusable items.
• Large plastic products like bins or trays, pouches, plastic bags, and toys.
• Diapers and personal hygiene products
