Trash Pick Up Schedule in Smyrna
Smyrna has implemented an innovative waste collection approach, dividing the town into five districts. Trash and recycling are collected five days a week, with pickups occurring on the same day by different trucks. This strategy ensures consistent service and quick response to any collection issues.
Residential Trash Collection Guidelines
Collection Containers
- Black cart with green lid: Trash
- Black cart with yellow lid: Recycling
- Containers must be placed curbside by 6 am on pickup day
- Do not mix trash and recycling
Recycling Services
Smyrna encourages responsible recycling through clear guidelines:
- Follow Delaware Solid Waste Authority’s recycling recommendations
- Recycling bins are made from at least 10% post-consumer plastic
- Separate trash and recyclables strictly
Bulk & Large Item Pick Up
Bulk item collection rules:
- One small bulk item per service day
- Larger bulk items collected on Thursdays
- Bulk items typically weigh 40+ pounds
- Bulk item requests must be made before noon on Fridays for the following week
- Special requirements:
- Mattresses and furniture must be plastic-wrapped and taped
- Appliances must have doors removed and be Freon-free
Yard Waste & Seasonal Services
Important limitations:

- No construction debris
- No paint, chemicals, tires, batteries
- No items containing gasoline or Freon
