Refuse & Recycling Pickup

Refuse (garbage) is collected each Wednesday by Hilltopper Refuse & Recycling Service, Inc. You do not need to contact anyone to begin service. Simply purchase specially marked “City of La Crescent” bags and place them on the curb/alley for pick up. Bags may be purchased at City Hall, Quillins, both Kwik Trip stores, and Pump 4 Less.

As of January 1, 2024, the garbage bag price will be $29.00 per bag of 10.

Recycling bins are collected every other Wednesday.

The City has an extensive recycling program, which reduces the number of bags you purchase.

Recycling Center

The Recycling Center is operated by Houston County and is located at 160 South 3rd Street.

Hours of Operation:

  • Thursdays: 10 AM – 6 PM (year-round)
  • Saturdays: 8 AM – 3 PM (year-round)

Closed if a Holiday falls on the day of the week scheduled to be open.

What You Can Recycle at the Recycling Center:

  • Large household items
  • Electronic items
  • Metal items
  • Tires
  • Aluminum cans (they buy aluminum cans at competitive prices)

Compost Site

The Compost Site is located just past Classic Rock.

Hours of Operation:

  • Mondays: 2 PM – 7 PM (begins the first Monday in April)
  • Saturdays: 8 AM – 3 PM

Fall Hours:

  • Mondays: 2 PM – 7 PM
  • Thursdays: 2 PM – 7 PM
  • Saturdays: 8 AM – 3 PM
  • First Thursday in October through the last Thursday in November

Winter Hours:

  • Saturdays: 8 AM – 3 PM (begins the first Saturday in December)

What You Can Compost at the Compost Site:

Residential Clean Sweep Event

The next Residential Clean Sweep Event is scheduled for Saturday, April 27, 2024, at the Houston County Recycling Center located at 105 North Grant Street, Houston, MN, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Items Accepted at the Clean Sweep Event:

  • Household Fluorescent and HID Bulbs
  • Household Latex and Oil Base Paints – 1 gallon or smaller
  • Residential or Ag Chemicals – Limit 200 lbs

ITEMS CONSIDERED TO BE HAZARDOUS WASTES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AT THIS EVENT. HAZARDOUS WASTES MUST BE TAKEN TO THE LA CROSSE COUNTY HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS MATERIALS FACILITY LOCATED AT 3202 BERLIN DRIVE, LA CROSSE, WI. HOUSTON COUNTY IN COOPERATION WITH LA CROSSE COUNTY SOLID WASTE PROGRAM WILL BE OFFERING $30.00 VOUCHERS FOR DISPOSAL OF HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTES. ONE VOUCHER PER RESIDENT, PER YEAR CAN BE OBTAINED FROM THE ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT.
