Metro Central transfer station is located at 6161 NW 61st Ave. in Portland. It accepts garbage, recycling, hazardous waste, and food scraps. The hours of operation are:

• Transfer station: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily
• Household hazardous waste: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, closed Sunday

The transfer station is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. It is open regular hours on Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.

Fees

The fees for using the transfer station vary depending on the type of waste and whether the load is covered or uncovered.

• Covered loads: $40 minimum fee up to the first 240 pounds, then $137.30 per ton
• Uncovered loads: $65 minimum fee up to the first 240 pounds, then $162.30 per ton

What is accepted?

The following items are accepted at the transfer station:

• Garbage
• Recycling
• Hazardous waste
• Food scraps

What is not accepted?

The following items are not accepted at the transfer station:

• Vehicles
• Asbestos-containing material
• Burned materials and/or wildfire ash
• Flat/built-up roofing
• Loads of liquids
• Petroleum-contaminated soil
• Radioactive metals

How to prepare your load

To save money on your disposal fees, be sure to cover your load with a tarp or similar material. Uncovered loads are charged an additional $25 per ton.

You should also separate your waste into different categories. This will help to reduce your disposal fees and make it easier for the transfer station staff to process your waste.

Hazardous waste

The following items are considered hazardous waste:

• Paints and stains
• Pool and spa chemicals
• Pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, and poisons
• Motor oil, antifreeze, and other automotive fluids
• Thinners and solvents
• Household cleaners and disinfectants
• Batteries
• Art and hobby chemicals
• Aerosol spray products
• Sharps (medical syringes)
• Propane tanks or bottles from barbecue grills
• Compact fluorescent light bulbs or CFLs, fluorescent tubes, and ballasts
• Mercury-containing items such as thermometers and thermostats

Hazardous waste is accepted free of charge for households. Businesses that generate small amounts of hazardous waste can apply for reduced-cost disposal.

Food scraps

Food scraps are accepted at the transfer station for a fee of $34 per ton. Food scraps include:

• Fruits and vegetables
• Meat and poultry
• Fish and seafood
• Dairy products
• Eggs
• Bread and pastries
• Coffee grounds and tea bags

Food scraps should be placed in a separate container from your other waste.
